I had two early season stands set for shooting does, so my son Kade and I hit the field and went hunting on October 7, 2006. The skies were clear, with temps in the low 60s. We headed into the timber at 5 p.m. so I knew the wait would not be long. At 5:30, Kade says, "dad, there is a wolf behind us." I smirked, knowing it couldn't be a wolf and said, "Are you sure?" He looked again and said, "It's a deer, Dad," so loudly that I can't believe the deer didn't hear it. I told Kade to sit very still and watch. I spun around, put my pin on the sweet spot and made a 22-yard shot. The arrow passed through her vitals and after a 50-yard run she toppled over. Kade was so excited he nearly fell out of the tree. Kade has been hunting with me for three years now and will always be my best huntin' buddy.
