While attempting to arrow a large boar hog I spotted on our deer lease in Hondo, Texas, I was surprised at the number of turkeys gobbling in the distance. I brought my pop-up blind in case the opportunity presented itself, and began to formulate a plan. It was 10 a.m. on a windy 65-degree hill-country morning and upon setting the decoy and returning to the blind, I was caught off guard by the sight of a tom approaching. I quickly nocked an arrow as the bird got closer but a gust of wind moved my blind a foot or so and I lost sight of my target. He retreated but as I began calling to him he responded and returned only to find my decoy on its side. I then began a session of loud, aggressive yelping and purring calls and again the bird approached to within 25 yards. After waiting for an eternity at full draw, he entered a shooting lane and I touched-off the release. After tracking him over a hundred yards, I managed to get a second shot and recovered my first turkey with a bow.
