If you are a bowhunter, then you know who Fred Bear is—or at least you should. But while just about every archer has heard about this bowhunting icon, how much do you really KNOW about the legendary Papa Bear? Yes, he was a badass bowhunter who took more than his fair share of dangerous game with traditional tackle. But he was also a shrewd businessman who was instrumental in marketing archery and bowhunting to the masses. His combination of shooting skills, woodsmanship and marketing genius combined to make Fred a pivotal figure in the history of bowhunting, the likes of which we will probably never see again.
For those who recall Fred Bear vividly, and especially for younger bowhunters who know Bear only by his legend, The Sportsman Channel is presenting a special tribute documentary titled “Fred Bear: Father of Bowhunting” this Friday at 7 p.m. Eastern. The special is presented by Bear Archery, Bear’s namesake company. Bear continues to make some of the world’s top traditional and compound bows, helping to keep the spirit of its founder alive and well, and Bear officials I’ve spoken with say Friday’s special is truly that—a “special” event you won’t want to miss. Among the highlights will be interviews with many of archery’s biggest names, vintage video footage from many of Fred’s biggest hunts and never-before told stories about this true American legend.
Here’s a quick video preview of the show:
I know I am anxious to see it, and I’ll be setting the DVR to record, too!
