Jim Fletcher Archery Insider Release Aid

As the name implies, the anodized bronze head of the Insider features a small hook that grabs the inside of your nocking loop.

Release aids aren't the most exciting category of archery gear, but they play a critical role in your setup. The release is your only physical connection to the bowstring, so having one you are comfortable and confident with is extremely important. While there are many release styles on the market, count me among the majority of bowhunters who prefer an index-finger release in combination with a string-mounted nocking loop.

In recent years, a number of new hook-style releases have been developed specifically for nocking loop shooters. One of the latest entries in that category is the Insider from Jim Fletcher Archery. As the name implies, the anodized bronze head of the Insider features a small hook that grabs the inside of your nocking loop. Thanks to the open hook, there is no need to squeeze the trigger to open jaws before hooking up. All you do is snag the loop with the jaw and draw -- a design that makes getting to full draw quick and easy while keeping your eyes on an approaching buck or bull.

The hook is designed to release the loop cleanly for consistent shooting. Meanwhile, the forward trigger -- which is adjustable from super heavy to ultra light -- features an internal roller system for smooth operation and releases the loop with absolutely no trigger travel. This is critical to executing a proper surprise release, because any "sponginess" in the trigger allows you to anticipate the shot, which promotes flinching, trigger punching and other bad habits.

The Insider comes with a lifetime warranty and is available with a leather buckle strap or nylon strap with Velcro closure. In testing the leather strap version, I found the Insider extremely crisp and comfortable, and I was impressed with its rugged design and feathery two-ounce total weight. MSRP: $75
