Rytera Alien XT Review: Quiet, Accurate Shooter

Rytera continues its popular Alien bow line with the new 2012 Alien XT. Starting in 2009, the young bow company (a subsidiary of Martin Archery) made quite a splash with its Alien X bow, which introduced space-age bridging and alien-like accents on a unique riser. Since that time, Rytera has offered many versions of the Alien to accommodate a wide range of archers, culminating in the current line with four models bearing the Alien name.

The Rytera Alien XT is home to the eye-catching XT riser, Hybrix 2 cam system, Power Tough limbs, RotoCup limb containment system, Integral Grip and a handful of vibration-damping accessories.

Uniquely Functional

Rytera's Alien XT riser is designed to provide performance through the reflex geometry, rigidity through the expanded footprint, a base for components to call home and looks that will generate brand recognition. The XT riser has a matrix of multi-shaped bridges, sweeping radiuses, webbed connections and features such as the Vibration Escape Module (VEM) fixtures that give this bow a high-tech look. The detailed machining is remarkable. Three small-diameter green inlays situated in the riser's webbing add to the Alien theme.

Functionally, the riser is modular and consists of three basic pieces fitted together at either end of the sight window. Each piece is CNC-machined from a solid billet of aluminum and, when assembled, creates an overall reflex geometry configuration for increased power stroke and speed. The distinctive rear strut adds depth to the riser, which provides a rigid and strong platform while also boosting aesthetics.

Rytera employs a series of accessories designed to minimize vibration and noise. At each end of the riser is a Vibration Escape Module (VEM) seated in a special receptacle. Each VEM consists of an aluminum weight is suspended in a soft, copolymer body. During the shot, the solid weight moves within the soft module to counteract vibration.

This same VEM material is used for the company's Hunter Arrow Shelf that prevents game-spooking noise if your arrow should fall of the rest. An STS string stopper with internal dampening and multiple string mounted BowJax dampeners join the attack on noise and vibration. The cork-backed Alien XT grip is machined directly into the riser and features gently rounded corners that create a comfortable interface.

Rytera's new Alien XT is outfitted with their Hybrix 2 cam system, which is advertised to hit IBO speeds ranging from 330-340 fps. The Hybrix 2 is designed with great flexibility in mind, as it has a wide range of available draw lengths and an easily adjustable draw stop that fine-tunes letoff. Draw lengths between 26 and 30.5 inches can be selected, in half-inch increments, on a single rotating module by simply removing a couple screws, rotating the module to the desired position and replacing the screws. Each selection is clearly marked with an engraved position/hole number to ensure accuracy. No bow press is required to make this change. The draw stop on the bottom cam is easily adjusted to customize the feel of the back wall and fine-tune letoff. Rytera advertises the letoff at 80 percent, with downward adjustments.

The Hybrix 2 is a modified two-cam configuration, which rotates on sealed bearings and a stainless steel axle for increased efficiency. The cables in this system are each directly tied to both cams, creating a self-correcting mechanism. Both cams function as a single component, reducing the effects of any imbalances in the system.

Maximum Performance, Minimum Material

Rytera's Alien XT limbs reach a past parallel position at full draw, putting a damper on shock, vibration and noise. Industry standard Gordon Glass materials are used to manufacture the 13-inch PowerTough limbs. Rytera limbs are also unique in that they offer 15 pounds of adjustment for each range. Limb sets are available in ranges of 35-50, 45-60 and 55-70 pounds.

The interface between the limbs and riser is critical for consistent performance. Rytera relies on its RotoCup system, which utilizes minimal material to get the job done. This limb containment system is aligned to the riser by -- and pivots around -- a hidden, precision polished steel pin that is pressed into the riser. Two more polished steel pins then align the Roto Cup to the non-hinged portion of the limb.

Impressions

The Alien XT had a good day at the target range, demonstrating a notably quiet shot with very little shock or vibration. While the XT was somewhat heavier than expected, it was solid on target and demonstrated excellent balance. The grip was comfortable, and the draw cycle proved to be quite smooth.
